Modeling Intelligent Energy Systems for Cities and Regions

As the hubs of economic activity, cities drive the vast majority of the world’s energy use and are major contributors to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Nowadays, roughly half of the world’s population is living in urban areas, and this share is increasing over time, projected to reach 60% by 2030. Cities are responsible for the largest consumption of energy resources worldwide – between 60 to 80% – and account for a roughly equal share of global CO2 emissions.

The European Institute for Energy Research (EIFER) is a European economic interest group whose mission is to develop know-how and innovative solutions and products for the management of energy and related economic and environmental questions. Dr. Enrique Kremers from EIFER evaluates energy policies and their impact on reducing energy consumption to improve energy efficiency.

Energy systems are a complex and constantly evolving world. Current tools used for analysis are typically specialized and only useful on small-scale or one-level systems. Because energy systems are multi-layered, there is an increase of decentralized decision processes, and there are many heterogenous entities, Dr. Kremers chose AnyLogic software to modeling and simulation of energy systems.

At the AnyLogic Conference 2015, Dr. Kremers presented;

  1. Smart Grid Modeling on island systems to simulate the influence of photovoltaics on the islands current energy system, and
  2. Optimization for local energy system management to compare power consumption at different time frames and analyze capital and operational expenditures.
