Improve Public Transit Bus Rider Satisfaction 14.03.2016 Rene Reiter

In public transport, bus bunching refers to a group of two or more transit vehicles (such as buses or trains), which were scheduled to be evenly spaced running along the same route, instead running in the same location at the same time, according to Wikipedia. Dave Sprogis, Volunteer Software Developer, and Data Analyst in Watertown, MA noticed a constant complaint from residents about bus service provided by the MBTA. On a route that advertises a bus “every 10 minutes or less” during rush hour, waits were frequently more than 30 minutes, sometimes an hour! As you probably assume, buses do not start out bunched — they start out evenly spaced according to the schedule that deploys them. However, as the buses run the route, some run a little faster while others run a little slower. There is variability in traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, numbers of passengers loading and unloading, or even differences in driver pace.[...]

Learning Simulation for Healthcare: Videos, Slides, and Example Models 09.07.2015 Stepan Egorov

Do you apply simulation modeling in healthcare, or interested in learning more? Dr. Nathaniel Osgood, Associate Professor at University of Saskatchewan, has provided a series of video lectures, step-by-step tutorials, and example models that demonstrate how-to build multimethod, or hybrid simulation models. These models are utilized to solve problems in the area of health research. Dr. Osgood focused his materials on multimethod model-building because he believes it can provide greater capacity to respond to a modeler’s intention, and is capable of more precisely addressing various research questions. As a result, AnyLogic is his simulation software of choice. [...]

Artificial Glaciers and AnyLogic Fight Against the Climate Change 18.06.2015 Stepan Egorov

Ladakh region, located in the north of India. It is unique by its climate where Arctic and desert conditions meet, and temperatures range from -35 °C in winter to 35 °C in summer. In the remote mountain parts of the land, agriculture is the core of the economy. Local farmers have been using water from glaciers for farming for centuries. Today, the global climate change has put the agriculture in danger: due to the global warming, the glaciers provide not enough water for irrigation during the most critical spring months. In January 2014, students and teachers from the local SECMOL school campus started working on the project called Ice Stupa. These are artificial glaciers named after traditional Buddhist stupas of Tibet because if the visual resemblance. [...]
